I spent most of my time inside 4 of your marriages yesterday (That surely means that I needed a little reinforcement of the truth, as well as the mystery, of marriage for myself.), and this quote from a great book sums up the answer to all of the questions that came up (especially inside my own life and marriage).  I offer it up in loving tribute to E.& E., G. & S., D. & T., J. & M., and most importantly, to my loving partner, Anne, in re-statement of my commitment to be willing to "spill myself out" in our partnership, knowing that I have "nothing whatsoever to lose" by doing so. And, by the way, for those of you I spoke to in a corporate setting yesterday, this same phenomenon applies to leadership as well.  For leadership to work powerfully in enriching people's lives (vs. just impacting the "financial" bottom line in the short-term), leaders must take sufficient care of themselves such that they can give up all focus on themselves in their service of others - to spill themselves out to their employees. 

And any who look at their leadership roles as places to appease their egos and/or gain some control over the world in "retaliation" for their own personal wounds will be sadly disappointed at the result over time and eventually taught hard lessons about this approach to it.  It is a relentless lesson that no one escapes over the long haul.  Attempting to control others, competing for turf, gossiping, lying, manipulating, not doing what you say, practicing "pass-through" management, taking short cuts, in order to effect some personal result you want, will produce some very harsh lessons that ultimately lead to your complete surrender.  Your only choice will be whether to walk down the stairs or get thrown out the window, as I've stated before.  So, it all comes back to love being the most powerful force in the world, in any venue, and it will not be denied.  Bill O'Brien (from The Fifth Discipline fame), I now understand what you meant back in 1995, in what was one of the most important airplane conversations with a stranger in my life, when you said that "love will be the most powerful leadership tool of the 21st century."   - Jim Spivey
